Nika Urbas | Hot New Designer On The Block!

If this label is not yet on your fashion radar sit up and take note because this designer label is one to watch! Maria Moderna is the perfect name for this very modern label. London based designer Nika Urbas who trained at St Martin's uses a special technique called flat quilting to create dynamic  shapes and blocks of colour on her garments. Her winter collection is the art deco of 2012, architecture for the body which uses strong geometric shapes, bold colours and contrasting textures combined with exquisite elegant cuts, she is a genius in my humble opinion. Her intuitive sense of colour and design is very sophisticated. I can't wait to see her spring collection, my favourite pieces featured here, are the four pocketed dress at the top and her white, silver and black fitted dress, I'm looking forward to sharing her spring collection here. You can find Nika at   http://www.mariamoderna.co.uk/ and at asos.

My Passport to Style | Edinburgh Hosts Jungle City Event

Sabine Roemer and her encrusted hornbill in Edinburgh

JUNGLE CREATURES UNLEASHED ACROSS EDINBURGH

Edinburgh is one of my favorite cities in the world and I am very fond of elephants, perhaps because they are a large part of my dads culture in Nepal, I love their solemn aura and the fact that they look so old like mature oaks trees, I met my first elephant on the streets of Kathmandu aged just three, my mum says I was completely transfixed. So when I discovered that talented jewellery designer Sabine Roemer was taking part in a new and very flamboyant exhibition in Edinburgh to help save them, I had to share the exciting news here on My Passport to Style!

Richly painted ‘Jungle City’ sculptures have launched themselves onto the streets, parks and neighborhoods' of Edinburgh and are currently making a Great 'Spectacle' of themselves in a bid to raise funds and awareness for their endangered relatives in Asia.

One of the pieces expected to fetch a significant sum for the Elephant Family charity is a hornbill decorated with feathers, pearls and a 383 carat ruby from Tanzania, which is set in a hand crafted sterling silver mask. The exotic creature has been created by German born goldsmith and jewelry designer, Sabine Roemer.

“I created this beautiful paradise bird with the intention to escape into an amazing tropical and colorful world through his eyes: set with beautiful crafted 383,09 carat Rubies from Tanzania”

“I have been enormously inspired by the people and work of Elephant Family and am happy to again be a big part of this year’s Jungle City. I hope through these beautiful art pieces we can build awareness for these endangered animals and make a change” (Sabine Roemer)

Sabine’s hornbill can be found in the Harvey Nichols store in St Andrew’s Square where shoppers will also discover a hot rod inspired tiger encrusted with more than 200,000 Swarovski elements by artist Johnny Rocket and a gold leaf ‘crocodile’.

Edinburgh is the first city in the world to host a ‘Jungle City’, event which is 100% charitable and has been organized to benefit the work of lead charity Elephant Family and six other conservation NGOs. Throughout September tourists and city dwellers alike can expect to spot 130 hand painted sculptures of some of the planets most endangered and extraordinary wildlife.

The sculptures will be sold at a glittering auction event on the 29th September at the National Museum of Scotland.

The All New Project Runway Needs You!

If your like me and your talent lies more in the design aspects of fashion, rather than sewing and pattern cutting, and you sigh as you watch project runway, at what could be if these barriers were not placed in the path of your design smarts.

Then make your way to John Lewises in the UK, what has now become a Mecca for budding designers everywhere from the age of 6+! Intrigued? Well let me explain, you can now buy a kit called a harumika, for the modest sum of £20.00, which contains everything needed to create your own design's in miniature in minuite's without the use of scissors or even a sewing machine!

Join Me For A Mystical Encounter Of The Best Kind!

Hi everyone, sometimes I think perhaps I am a bit of a Style Aura, commonly known as Trend spotter. I thought I might have a bit of fun sharing some trends with you that I was rocking, and even designing three years ago, that are now here on the highstreet! At number one, see this gorgeous leather dress, we all have diffent names for the colour, some of us call it toffee, some pumpkin and some including me, call it rust, a huge colour this fall. I was sniggered at by friends, for taking a shine to this colour two seasons ago. I fell in love with how classy it looks with ivory, black and slate blue, it also looks fab with yellow!! At number two, my second Style/Eco prediction, which I began designing and trying to secure a patent for (I kid you not!!!) was a fashionable shopping basket on roller blade wheels. Made out of waterproof fabric and printed in limited edition prints and bright colours. My mission to create a shopping bag on wheels, every woman of every age would be proud to sport around town, saving the planet and keeping them fit at the same time! Now M&S are producing them and other high street names. At number three, wearing a necklace over your winter coat, a really unique trend with regal tendencies, set to be big this A/W. I decided to play around with wearing necklaces outside my coat, last A/ W and eased my way in,  by wearing a large black pompom necklace that I created, over a colbalt blue coat, modeled here by Burberry for this A/W and looking very chic. Finally, at number four, I very nearly entered a competition to design an item of denium for a huge jean company some three years ago, unfortunately I ran out of time and had to abandon my entry! My design was a two piece denim suit that looked like a one piece denium jump suit, practical and chic. Detailing included, puff sleeves and collar, cut to represent broaderie anglaise fabric, underlaid with lemon fabric, so you got a feminine denim and yellow lace effect. A broad sash with rivet detailing all over it, that tied in a huge bow at the back of the suit, to make it a little sassy! A fitted bodice with side zipper a full trouser, tapering at the ankle, suggested acessories, baseball boots or fifties style pumps.I could kick myself that I didn't manage to get my entry in, given how huge the jumpsuit is at present!!! If you have had any style predictions that have become hot trends this year, I would love to hear about them.
